Enabling the public sector to save money, innovate and make more effective policy decisions by using space technology and data

Thematic Areas

Within SSGP, we focus our attention on thematic areas which are based around the user needs in government. Periodically, we choose a new thematic area, engage the relevant government departments and demonstrate the capabilities that satellite applications can bring to this area. We often launch a competition based on the theme to run an SSGP project to develop a space solution for government requirements. You can see all of the past projects grouped by date or thematic area in the case studies section of the website.

Current Thematic Areas

Our current thematic areas are ‘Emergency Services’, ‘Disaster Risk Management’ and Infrastructure. These were chosen to reflect the interest we received from government departments and identified opportunities where satellite data and services could add value. Requirements gathering meetings  and workshops are held with relevant government representatives to create a list of end user requirements and subsequently create a roadmap on each topic. We will then consider launching competitions and initiatives to develop satellite applications to solve the user requirements.

  • Emergency Services – this covers a broad range of topics from fire response preparations, connected vehicles and situational awareness
  • Disaster Risk Management – from satellite communications to instant mapping, satellites are ideally placed to make preparing and responding to disasters more efficient.
  • Infrastructure  -  from baselining and monitoring building and ground movement, moinitoring progress through change detection, environmental impact assessment, visualisation tools for public consultations and sensor connectivity  - satellites provide a wealth of opportunities for this sector and critical national infrastructure
