Case Studies

SSGP runs regular UK competitions to showcase the benefits that satellite applications can bring to the UK Government. Competition winners from industry and academia usually run a year-long project.

The competitions demonstrate SSGP's brief to:

This project aimed to provide the basis for regular remote assessment of structural condition for Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) assets such as power stations, railways, roads and flood defences. It will provide early warning indicators of potential engineering failures through absolute motion vector mapping using a combination of satellite based radar with satellite navigation.
This project sought to provide improved understanding of patterns of life in congested maritime environments. A specific focus was placed on smaller vessels such as leisure craft that do not meet the requirement for AIS. Data mining was used on existing archives of data to build up a picture of spatial and temporal activity in maritime locations in the UK and other areas of interest to Government.
This project will deliver an innovative low cost satellite-enabled solution to the public sector for managing urban air pollution exposure and urban clean air policies. This project aimed to ultimately develop a multi-purpose platform that integrates various data sources namely satellite, drones and crowd-sourced data on a single platform. In addition, global information will be processed to identify the level of risk in different regions under study and to create predictive models that take into account natural phenomena or human activity to determine the probability of having a local marine litter event requiring intervention
This demonstration project aims to address the current lack of reliable and high-precision pluvial flood forecasting by developing a ‘Smart’ mapping application. This will be developed for Greater London and will combine three proven technologies: FloodWatch; Social Media AI; and Green Space Analyser, as well as using data from existing methods.
This feasibility study utilised PNT data alongside vehicle and traffic sensor data to assess the feasibility of producing accurate, affordable and informative transport planning outputs. This project investigated enhancing Network Rail’s estimation of soil moisture across their network using Sentinel-1 SAR imagery. by developing algorithms and validating an EO SAR-derived soil moisture measurement methodology.
UK GEOS undertook a short feasibility study to demonstrate the role that Earth Observation (EO) could have in understanding coastal erosion and accretion, and better managing responses to these huge forces of nature.
This project will enable Rezatec to work with Forest Research (FR) to explore the feasibility of differentiating tree species of interest and their typical annual phenological pattern through this project SAPPHIRE. This effort will be focussed on mapping the distribution of different broadleaved species within selected study sites and are afflicted with newly introduced forest pests.
