ESA Business Applications

ESA Business Applications is dedicated to the development of operational applications and services to meet the needs of a wide range of users through the use of different types of space assets. ESA Business Applications places strong emphasis on commercially sustainable applications, where close partnerships with customers and end-users can help foster the improved utilisation of existing space capacity and capability.

  • Overview: ESA Business Applications aims to stimulate commercially sustainable applications and service development based on the use of the most appropriate technologies drawn from space systems integrated with or complimented by terrestrial / in-situ systems, using a service delivery model most appropriate to the user’s needs. One or more space assets can be used, which include Satellite Communications, Earth Observation, Satellite Navigation and technologies developed for Human Space Flight.
  • Competitions: ESA Business Applications has a permanently open call which offers different levels of matched funding to support the development of the commercial products or services making use of space assets.
  • Invitation To Tenders on specific topics: Periodically through ESA Business Applications, Invitation to Tender (ITT) calls are issued on specific topics that are often fully funded, as well as a series of Kick Start ITTs which are of fixed duration (6 months) and 75% ESA funding up to a total cost of €80k on specific thematic areas.   • UK Ambassador Network: Within the UK a network of 5 regional ambassadors has been established to support ESA Business Applications covering the following regions: South West England and South Wales, North Wales and North West England, Midlands and North East England, South and South East England, and Scotland and Northern Ireland. The network of UK Ambassadors is coordinated by an Overall Coordinator and supported by a Business Developer.
