Case Studies

SSGP runs regular UK competitions to showcase the benefits that satellite applications can bring to the UK Government. Competition winners from industry and academia usually run a year-long project.

The competitions demonstrate SSGP's brief to:

This work constituted a new phase in project aimed at creating a novel medical screening vehicle that fully exploits all of benefits created by satellite connectivity.
This project was initiated following a request from Exeter City Council to be able to better track and manage trees in the City. The Council holds a data store which identifies the location, species, diameter, risk score, spread of the canopy and more for each tree, or group of trees, in the city. The trees are inspected on a regular basis and any changes are fed into the database.
The aim of this project was to demonstrate to Hampshire County Council the opportunities that a portfolio of flood information products derived from earth observation (EO) data could bring. The County is vulnerable to flooding from both rivers and the sea and having ready access to information about both flood-prone areas and the evolution of flood events as they occur would help to mitigate the risk.
The aim of this project was to enable Local Authorities to make better and more cost-effective decisions when it comes to improving air quality. This is in line with European legislation, which states that UK Local Authorities have a statutory duty to assess air quality and improve it where possible, or at least limit deterioration.
This project set out to develop a prototype sea level monitoring service for UK seas to assess sea level variability using space-borne altimeter data combined with tide gauge data.
The project’s goal was to assess the commercial and economic feasibility of a solution for monitoring events of interest to Local Authorities in the UK using satellite data – specifically synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
The aim of this project was to investigate the feasibility of acquiring timely and accurate soil moisture content (SMC) data for the UK from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) remote sensing, specifically from the new European Sentinel-1 SAR sensors.
