Enabling the public sector to save money, innovate and make more effective policy decisions by using space technology and data

Thematic Areas

Within SSGP, we focus our attention on thematic areas which are based around the user needs in government. Periodically, we choose a new thematic area, engage the relevant government departments and demonstrate the capabilities that satellite applications can bring to this area. We often launch a competition based on the theme to run an SSGP project to develop a space solution for government requirements. You can see all of the past projects grouped by date or thematic area in the case studies section of the website.

Current Thematic Areas

Our current thematic areas for 2016/17 are ‘Human Movement’ and ‘Disaster Risk Management’. These were chosen to reflect the interest we received from government departments. Workshops will be held with relevant government representatives to create a list of end user requirements and subsequently create a roadmap on each topic. We will then consider launching a competition in April 2017 to develop satellite applications to solve the user requirements.

  • Human Movement – this covers a broad range of topics from migration mapping to land management uses to crowd surveillance
  • Disaster Risk Management – from satellite communications to instant mapping, satellites are ideally placed to make preparing and responding to disasters more efficient.
