ESA Business Applications programme

The European Space Agency’s Business Applications programme is dedicated to the development of operational applications and services to meet the needs of a wide range of users through the use of different types of space assets. Business Applications places strong emphasis on commercially sustainable applications, where close partnerships with customers and end-users can help foster the improved utilisation of existing space capacity and capability.

  • Overview: ESA’s Business Applications programme aims to stimulate commercially sustainable applications and service development based on the use of the most appropriate technologies drawn from both space systems integrated with or complimented by terrestrial / in-situ systems, using a service delivery model most appropriate to the user’s needs. One or more space assets can be used, which include Satellite Communications, Earth Observation, Satellite Navigation or technologies developed for Human Space Flight.
  • Competitions: The Business Applications programme has a permanently open call which offers different levels of matched funding to support the development of the commercial products or services making use of space assets.
  • Invitation To Tenders on specific topics: Periodically through Business Applications, ESA offers Invitation to Tender (ITT) calls on specific topics that are often fully funded, as well as a series of Kick Start ITTs which are fixed duration (6months), fixed price (€60k) feasibility studies on specific thematic areas. Details on all such opportunities can be found here.
